I'm a bit late in, as often happens, but I thought this worth highlighting as I've been following up by reading some of he Crime Fiction mentioned by Mr Phillips in this BBC radio4 programme (first aired in May 2011), In For The Kill, in which he investigates the coming of age of black British crime fiction and asks why there is still a reluctance to see the black detective as hero. mike phillips - in for the kill

From: BookReview - Adeyinka Makinde  Date: 1.June.2011
Subject: Review- Manning Marable's Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention
To: editor@unheardwords.com
A Life of Reinvention Adeyinka Makinde British lawyer and boxing enthusiast author of 'JERSEY BOY: The Life and Mob Slaying of Frankie DePaula'
reviews Manning Marable's re-telling of the life of Malcolm X...
"The potted outlines of his story from birth to death are fairly well-known; this aided pre-eminently by the best-selling Autobiography of Malcolm X, which was released some months after his assassination in 1965, and the 1992 film Malcolm X. His metamorphosis from street criminal to religious zealot culminated in a final state of transition during which he was cut down.

It was during this period that the man decried by his detractors as an apostle of hate and a promoter of racial separation altered significantly his approach and attitude to the struggle for rights, and with his break from the Nation of Islam, made a substantive amendment to his religious faith." read more

Subject: Theology of a Violent Age (by Woody Carter PHD)
To: editor@unheardwords.com
woody carter Any politician or pundit will agree: we live in a violent and dangerous age. Our pent-up anger and rage fills our households and spills over into our neighborhoods and streets, leaving African American families -who live in poverty and with limited capability to ward off shame and self-contempt- as its unfortunate victims.
Woody Carter's debut literary offering Theology for a Violent Age provides evidence that the negative images found in black plays and film remain present in African-America life and culture, today. Not only in the African-American underclass, but also in black middle-class households that for many are holding on by a thread.  For more info visit Woody Carter's blog.
